WomanKIND Clydesdale rose to the challenge in our Community, during COVID-19 Pandemic. One of our members very quickly suggested, as soon as Lockdown was announced, that we should get actively involved in helping those more vulnerable residents in the town. We reached out to the local Medical Practice, our Community Council and others in the area, local businesses and other interested parties and arranged a meeting for a brain storm.
A plan was put together to offer shopping and food deliveries to those elderly, isolating or suffering from coronavirus. The service was up and running in a matter of days and Biggar Community Action Group was formed. WomanKIND provided the first volunteers, and two of our members are part of the Core Group which was formed to deliver the services, manage the volunteers, publicise the most up to date information provided by The Scottish Government via social media and posters around town and monitor the town's needs on an ongoing basis. Extra services such as The Listening Ear, a dog-walking service and a twice-weekly hot lunch delivery (for vulnerable folk who were not managing to cook) were quickly added to the list of services provided as soon as the need was identified.
WomanKIND realised that many vulnerable isolating residents were feeling low or anxious or lonely and came up with the idea of Boxes of Kindness. Funding was sought and secured and over 300 such boxes were delivered during the pandemic.
Our members were also heavily involved in making face-coverings which were made available to the volunteers and anyone else in the town who asked for them.
We are so very proud of the contribution of our members to the Community Action Group.
