The Bra Challenge
WomanKIND are collecting bras - old and new, functioning and past it - for charity. Our Bra Bank is ready to receive your discarded bras. It is situated in the Gillespie Centre, Biggar in the small pram park directly opposite the door into the cafe. There are WomanKIND signs pointing the way. All bras will be sent to www.againstbreastcancer.org.uk. By depositing your old bra in our bra bank, you are raising vital funds for research as well as being environmentally friendly and supporting the economy of developing countries. This exciting project keeps textiles out of landfill, helps small businesses in Africa and raises funds for Against Breast Cancer's ground breaking research. Bras are packed up by their recycling partner and shipped out to Africa where traders support their families by selling textiles locally at village markets. 2nd hand bras are very popular among the women in African villages where they don’t have the funds to buy new ones. Successful ventures like this keep many families in developing countries out of poverty, and plenty of people in the UK in a job. Any bras that are genuinely beyond redemption will be dismantled and disposed of properly. 7.8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year are saved by collecting, reusing and recycling many thousands of tons of textiles and shoes every year. The donation to their research work, by their recycling partner, is based on the weight of the bank so more bras mean more funds. Against Breast Cancer receives £700 a tonne. Every £1 you raise is vital in enabling them continue their work to find a vaccine against breast cancer and to look at ways to increase the survival of women and men who have the disease Every single bra donated will benefit another woman. Just post it anonymously in the bin! |
